When a funded trader at a prop firm clicks “buy” on EUR/USD, a chain of relationships and decisions activates that most traders have never thought about. Understanding this chain — the prop firm-broker relationship — is not just interesting background information. It directly explains execution quality, spread levels, and why certain prop firm behaviors make structural sense.

The Basic Relationship Architecture

Most prop firms do not hold broker licenses themselves. They operate as evaluation and capital allocation businesses while relying on regulated brokers to actually execute trades and provide access to interbank liquidity.

The typical structure:

Prop Firm → White-Label Broker Partner → Prime Broker / Liquidity Provider → Interbank Market

The prop firm provides the evaluation infrastructure, rules enforcement, and trader-facing products. The broker provides the execution environment, regulatory licensing, and access to market liquidity. The prime broker or liquidity provider aggregates prices from multiple liquidity sources and routes orders to the interbank market.

A vs B Book and What It Means for You

The terms “A book” and “B book” describe two different approaches to handling trader order flow:

A book (agency model): Every trade is passed directly to the interbank market. The broker earns only from the spread or commission. If you win on EUR/USD, a real counterparty at an interbank level loses.

B book (principal model): The broker takes the opposite side of your trade and does not pass it to the interbank market. If you win, the broker loses. If you lose, the broker profits.

Most retail prop firm accounts are processed through a combination of these models:

The broker decides which trades to route based on their own risk management calculations. This is entirely legal and standard practice in retail forex.

What this means for prop traders: The execution environment on a prop account managed by a B-book broker can behave differently from true interbank execution. Slippage patterns, requote behavior, and fill quality all reflect the broker’s own risk management decisions rather than pure market conditions.

Why This Explains Certain Prop Firm Behaviors

Several behaviors that sometimes confuse prop traders make complete sense within the broker-relationship framework:

Payout timing. Payouts to funded traders are funded from the prop firm’s operating capital, not from broker settlements. Prop firm payout capacity is a function of evaluation fee revenue and risk management, not individual trade outcomes.

Account closure at breach. When a funded trader breaches drawdown, the account is closed immediately. This rapid closure reflects the broker’s risk management feeding through to the prop firm — the broker is not interested in managing accounts that have exceeded their risk parameters.

Execution quality differences between firms. Prop firms that partner with higher-quality broker infrastructure (typically A-book or hybrid brokers with genuine institutional liquidity access) provide better execution than firms running on purely B-book retail infrastructure.
