The Cost Nobody Shows in the Headline Numbers
Prop firms compete aggressively on advertised profit splits, evaluation pricing, and drawdown limits. The number that does not appear on any comparison chart — but that directly affects your actual profitability — is slippage.
For a trader executing 200 trades per month, average slippage of 0.5 pips per trade represents 100 pips of execution cost that is never reflected in backtests run on historical prices. At typical position sizes on a $100,000 funded account, 100 pips is $1,000 — potentially the difference between a profitable month and a loss.
Understanding and managing slippage is not optional for serious prop traders. It is core risk management.
What Slippage Is
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected to receive when placing an order and the price you actually received when the order was executed. It occurs because:
Price moves between order submission and execution. In fast-moving markets, prices change in the microseconds between when your order is received and when it is matched. The market moved against you before your order could be filled.
Your desired price is not available at the required size. If you want to buy 5 lots of EUR/USD at 1.08500, but only 2 lots are available at that price, the remaining 3 lots must be filled at higher prices. This is liquidity slippage.
The spread widens during your order execution. Particularly common around high-impact news events, where the bid-ask spread can expand from 0.5 pips to 5+ pips in milliseconds. Your market order is filled at the widened spread price.
Types of Orders and Their Slippage Profiles
Market orders are most vulnerable to slippage. When you click buy or sell at market, you accept whatever price is currently available. During fast markets, this can deviate significantly from the displayed price.
Limit orders specify a maximum buy price or minimum sell price. They do not experience positive slippage (getting filled at a better price than requested) but eliminate negative slippage by definition — if your limit price is not available, the order is not filled. The trade-off: some setups that would have been profitable are never entered because the limit price is not reached.
Stop orders (used for both stop-entry and stop-loss) convert to market orders when triggered and are therefore subject to full market order slippage. Stop losses in particular can experience significant slippage during sharp moves or news events.
How to Measure Slippage on Your Prop Account
Most trading platforms record actual fill prices. Measuring your slippage requires:
- After each market order fill, note the displayed price at the moment you submitted the order
- Compare to the actual fill price from your trade history
- Record the difference (in pips or points) for each trade
- Average across 50+ trades to identify your systematic slippage level
Anything above 0.5-0.8 pips average slippage on major forex pairs during liquid hours indicates an execution environment that is not best-execution quality. Above 1.5 pips average slippage warrants direct follow-up with the firm about their execution infrastructure.
Slippage Across Prop Firm Platforms
Not all prop firms offer equivalent execution quality. Based on community data and independent testing:
Lower slippage environments:

Strategies to Minimize Slippage Impact
Trade during peak liquidity windows. EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and other major pairs have the tightest spreads and deepest order books during the London-New York session overlap (8am-12pm EST). Trading during these windows minimizes both spread and slippage costs.
Use limit orders where your strategy allows. Entry by limit order eliminates negative slippage on entries. For strategies where precise entry timing allows limit placement, this is one of the highest-value execution improvements available.
Size down during high-impact news events. If you choose to trade through news events, reducing position size limits the total dollar value of adverse slippage when fills are poor.
Avoid trading in the first 5-10 minutes after a news release. During the immediate post-release period, liquidity temporarily degrades and slippage is highest. Waiting for the market to reprice and liquidity to return before entering gives you significantly better fill quality.
Monitor your firm’s execution during different market conditions. Build a personal database of your actual fill quality across different conditions. If your prop firm’s execution degrades significantly during specific conditions, incorporate that awareness into your trading rules.
Slippage is a permanent feature of live trading. What separates professional prop traders from casual traders is not the elimination of slippage — it is the systematic management of it as a known and quantifiable trading cost.
