Every Great Film Has a Vocabulary

Before you can master your craft, you need to master the language of your industry. Prop trading has its own vocabulary — terms that appear in every firm’s terms of service, every community discussion, and every challenge dashboard.

This glossary covers every significant term you will encounter in the prop trading world in 2026.

A

Account Balance The realized value of your trading account, not including any open floating positions. This is the number that determines your drawdown floor in many calculations.

Account Equity Your account balance plus or minus the floating profit/loss of all currently open positions. Equity fluctuates continuously while trades are open.

Account Stacking The practice of operating multiple funded accounts simultaneously, either at the same prop firm or across several firms, to multiply income potential.

Algorithmic Trading (Algo Trading) Automated trading using pre-programmed strategies executed by software (Expert Advisors, bots, cBots). Some prop firms permit it; others restrict or ban it entirely.

B

Balance Drawdown Drawdown calculated from your account balance (realized P&L only). Contrasts with equity drawdown, which includes floating losses.

Breakeven Stop Moving your stop-loss to your entry price after a trade moves favorably, eliminating the potential loss on that trade.

Buffer The remaining distance between your current equity and your drawdown floor. A $5,000 buffer on a $100,000 account means you can lose up to $5,000 more before violating the drawdown rule.

C

Challenge The evaluation period during which a trader must meet a prop firm’s profit target while respecting risk rules in order to qualify for a funded account. Also called “Evaluation” or “Assessment.”

Consistency Rule A rule that limits how much of your total profits can come from a single trading day. Usually expressed as a percentage (e.g., “best day cannot exceed 30% of total profits”).

Contract In futures trading, a standardized agreement to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price at a future date. Prop firm contract limits specify the maximum number of contracts you can hold simultaneously.

cTrader A trading platform known for advanced order types, ECN access, and clean execution, used by some prop firms as an alternative to MetaTrader.

D

Daily Drawdown Limit The maximum loss allowed in a single trading day, typically measured as a percentage of the starting balance or previous day’s closing equity. Violating this terminates the account.

Drawdown The reduction in account value from a peak to a subsequent trough. In prop trading, this is the central risk metric that determines account health and rule compliance.

DXtrade A web-based trading platform used by several modern prop firms. Requires no installation and runs in a browser.

E

EA (Expert Advisor) An automated trading script in the MetaTrader platform that executes trades based on pre-programmed conditions. Some prop firms allow EAs; many prohibit fully automated trading strategies without human oversight.

Evaluation See “Challenge.”

Equity See “Account Equity.”

Evaluation Fee The one-time cost paid to enter a prop firm challenge. Typically refundable upon receiving the first payout from the funded account at most major firms.

F

Floating P&L The unrealized profit or loss on currently open positions. Floating P&L directly affects your equity but not your balance until the position is closed.

Funded Account The live or simulated trading account provided by the prop firm after successfully passing the evaluation. This is where real profit splits apply.

Futures Standardized financial contracts traded on regulated exchanges (such as the CME) obligating the buyer/seller to transact at a specified future date and price.

H

Hard Stop (Hard Floor) The absolute maximum drawdown level beyond which the account is automatically closed or suspended. Touching the hard floor terminates the evaluation or funded account.

Hedging Holding simultaneous opposing positions on the same instrument. Some prop firms prohibit hedging; others allow it within limits.

High-Impact News Economic data releases or geopolitical events that cause significant market volatility. Major examples include NFP, CPI, Fed rate decisions, and central bank statements.

L

Leverage The ratio of trading position size to account equity. Higher leverage allows larger positions relative to account size but amplifies both gains and losses.

Lot A standard unit of trade size in forex. One standard lot = 100,000 units of base currency. Mini lots = 10,000 units. Micro lots = 1,000 units.

M

Maximum Drawdown The maximum permissible reduction from peak equity or starting balance allowed under a prop firm’s rules before the account is closed.

MetaTrader 4 / MetaTrader 5 (MT4/MT5) The most widely used trading platforms in the forex/CFD prop firm industry. MT5 has largely superseded MT4 among most prop firms in 2026.

Minimum Trading Days A rule at some firms requiring a minimum number of active trading days to pass a challenge, regardless of whether the profit target is hit sooner.

N

NFP (Non-Farm Payrolls) A monthly US economic report released on the first Friday of each month measuring employment changes in the US economy. One of the highest-impact news events for forex and futures traders.

NinjaTrader A professional-grade trading platform used primarily in the futures market, known for advanced order flow and volume analysis tools.

P

Payout The disbursement of your share of trading profits from the prop firm to your personal bank account, crypto wallet, or payment platform.

Payout Threshold The minimum profit required before you are eligible to request a payout. Varies by firm.

Pip The smallest standard price movement in a forex pair. For most pairs, 1 pip = 0.0001 movement. For JPY pairs, 1 pip = 0.01.

Position Size The number of lots or contracts you are trading. Determined by risk management calculations based on account size and stop-loss distance.

Profit Split The percentage of net trading profits the trader receives, with the remainder going to the prop firm.

R

Reset A paid service offered by some prop firms allowing traders to restore their account to starting conditions after violating a rule or hitting the drawdown floor.

Risk-Reward Ratio (RRR) The ratio of potential profit to potential loss on a trade. A 1:2 RRR means risking $100 to make $200.

Rithmic A data and execution infrastructure used by futures trading platforms. Forms the backbone of many futures prop firm accounts.

S

Scaling Plan A program offered by prop firms where consistent, profitable traders automatically or manually qualify for larger funded account sizes over time.

Slippage The difference between your expected trade execution price and the actual filled price. Common during high-volatility news events.

Spread The difference between the bid and ask price of an instrument. The spread represents the cost of entering a trade.

Static Drawdown A drawdown limit calculated from a fixed baseline (starting balance) that does not move regardless of subsequent profits.

T

Tick The minimum price movement for a futures contract. The dollar value per tick varies by instrument and is critical for calculating risk in futures trading.

Trailing Drawdown A drawdown limit that moves upward as your equity reaches new highs, maintaining a fixed distance between your floor and your peak equity.

TradeLocker A modern trading platform featuring native TradingView chart integration, used by FundedNext and a growing number of prop firms.

TradingView A popular charting and analysis platform used by millions of traders worldwide. Not itself an execution platform, but integrates with many brokers and prop firm platforms.

V

Violation Breaching any rule of a prop firm challenge or funded account, including exceeding daily drawdown, hitting the maximum drawdown floor, or breaking a prohibited strategy rule. Results in account termination.

W

Win Rate The percentage of trades that close in profit. Used alongside risk-reward ratio to evaluate strategy profitability.

Final Cut

Language is power in any industry. Know these terms fluently and you will navigate prop firm dashboards, terms of service, and community discussions with the confidence of someone who has been on this set before.

Master the vocabulary. Master the craft.
